Endocrinology: hormones, receptors and responses

A guide to interpreting agonism, antagonism and hormonal regulation.

Signals and regulatory circuits

Endocrinology investigates hormonal communication and tissue responses. A ligand may activate or block a receptor, but the response of a hormonal axis also depends on feedback circuits and experimental context.

What response was measured?

Distinguish binding affinity, receptor activity and hormone concentrations in the studied system. An increase in one marker does not establish a sustained change across the whole axis. Identify sampling time and the comparison used.

Identity of analogues

Hormone analogues can contain modifications that change investigated properties. Document sequence, chemical form and conjugation. Labels such as with DAC and without DAC do not replace identification and should not be grouped automatically.

Comparative reading

Compare studies addressing the same question at the same evidence level. Use references to separate biochemical findings, organism studies and human data. This guide does not define hormone-replacement or administration protocols.
